Closed Head Injuries


Head injuries were one of the most common injuries sustained by workers at the time of the Transocean Deepwater Horizon explosion. Some likely causes of closed head injuries and/or traumatic brain injuries include:

Crew thrown from bunks by the main explosion or subsequent blasts. With the constant activity on ships of this type, 24 hour rotating shifts are required.   This means that several crewmembers were likely resting in their bunks when the explosions occurred, sending them violently out of bed onto the floor.

Ceiling collapse. Initial reports from the site indicate that there were numerous ceiling collapses throughout the rig that caused serious injury to employees.

Shifting equipment. As the Deepwater Horizon shifted to its side from the force of the blast, any equipment would be free to follow the force of gravity and follow the tilt of the ship.

Multiple explosions. Reports indicate that in addition to the initial explosion and fire that devastated the vessel, additional subsequent explosions followed.   This series of blasts created very unstable conditions for the crewmembers and greatly increased the risks for head and brain injuries.

Loss of balance. Whether from the main explosion, the possible additional blasts, or any other means, it is likely that the crew of the Deepwater Horizon was thrown violently around during the disaster.     These circumstances make it difficult to maintain balance and increase the risk of trauma.

Closed head injuries and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can be especially traumatic because they involve the brain and sensitive membranes and tissues that surround it.   While difficult to diagnose without thorough testing, these injuries can lead to long term difficulties, and are often fatal if left untreated.

Common symptoms of closed head injuries can include:

  • Difficulty concentrating or thinking
  • Unusual mood swings
  • Memory issues
  • Persistent headaches
  • Decreased or limited function in the arms or legs
  • Speech problems
  • Emotional problems
