Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can affect quality of life and in some cases impair the ability to work and earn a living. For crewmembers on board the Deepwater Horizon at the time of the initial explosion, hearing loss may well be a reality.

Although not as visually obvious as burn or crushing injuries, hearing loss is no less of a serious personal injury.     The impact of this injury can include:

  • Difficulties in personal relationships;
  • Difficulty driving;
  • Inability to work as normal;
  • Diminished overall quality of life.

Common symptoms of hearing loss include:

  • Muffled hearing;
  • Difficulty separating human voices from background noise;
  • Needing the television or radio at higher volume than in the past;
  • Avoiding conversation and social situations;
  • Depression.
