Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was possible. Often, the mental and emotional fallout of a tragedy can leave lasting scars just as deep as physical injuries. Survivors of horrifying accidents, such as that which occurred on the Deepwater Horizon, face long-term risk for emotional injury in addition to the consequences of their serious physical injuries.

Many of the Transocean explosion survivors we are working with are concerned about the emotional fallout from the accident. Many individuals have reported experiencing some of the signs of PTSD:

  • Flashbacks of the explosion, fire, and aftermath;
  • Feeling emotionally numb;
  • Being easily startled;
  • Trouble remembering the event;
  • Other signs of emotional turmoil, including a feeling of being ‘on edge’.

Emotional trauma and Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD) claims are not uncommon. You may have been a worker onboard Deepwater Horizon, a member of the accident response team or an innocent bystander when the tragedy happened – but your life has been forever changed.

The scope of any emotional injury suffered by the victims of the Deepwater Horizon explosion may not be known for some time, but the symptoms and underlying emotional damage can be diagnosed and treated with counseling and other, appropriate professional care.
